Selected Federal Government Websites
This page provides links to a variety of Government websites in several subject
areas. Use the links below to see a listing of sites in each category. While
the majority of the websites listed below can be freely accessed by anyone,
a few may contain information that requires a Federal Depository Library login
and password. The login and password can be obtained in-person from a Reference
Librarian at the UMSL Libraries. Please also note that this guide is not comprehensive
and therefore is not inclusive of all available Federal Government Internet
resources.
Business and Economics
- Bureau of Economic Analysis
This site contains current U.S. economic data compiled by the Department of
Commerce's Bureau of Economic Analysis. Statistical information such as the
Gross Domestic Product, Personal Income, and much more can be found here.
- Bureau of Labor Statistics
The Bureau of Labor Statistics' site provides access to all types of labor
and economic data such as consumer spending, occupations, demographics, unemployment,
and wages.
- Davis-Bacon Wage Determinations
This site lists the current wage rates paid on federally funded construction
projects. Wage rates are available for each state at the county level.
- Department of Labor
The Department of Labor's main page links to numerous statistics, publications,
and data on a broad-range of labor topics.
- Economic Indicators
Economic Indicators combines economic data from both the U.S. Census Bureau
and the Bureau of Economic Analysis in one site.
- EDGAR
The U.S Securities and Exchange Commission's Electronic Data Gathering, Analysis,
and Retrieval system (EDGAR) provides access to various SEC filings from companies
dating back to 1996.
- Federal Reserve
Bank of St. Louis' Economic Research
This site gives access to several databases created by the Federal Reserve
Bank of St. Louis that provide all types of current and historic U.S. economic
data.
- National
Labor Relations Board
This site provides full-text access to many National Labor Relations Board
publications including manuals, regulations, decisions, and notices.

- Bureau of Justice
Statistics
The Bureau of Justice Statistics site provides crime data on such topics as
criminal offenders, crime victims, types of crimes committed, and much more.
- FBI Uniform Crime
Reports
The FBI’s Uniform Crime Reports are published annually and contain crime
statistics at national, state, and local levels. This site provides access
to the Uniform Crime Reports back to 1995.

- Child Stats
Child Stats provides access to statistics and reports dealing with children
in the U.S. The topics covered include family characteristics, population,
education, health, social environment, and more.
- Condition of
Education 2000-2005
This site links to the Condition of Education which is produced by the Department
of Education and contains statistics on all levels of education in the U.S.
- Department of Education
The main Department of Education site links to various research, statistics,
publications, and regulations dealing with education in the United States.
- National Center for Education
Statistics
The National Center for Education Statistics provides access to the education
data compiled by the U.S. Department of Education.
- Nation’s
Report Card
The National Assessment of Educational Progress, also referred to as the Nation’s
Report Card, assesses students’ knowledge in various subject areas.

This site provides an overview of the No Child Left Behind Act.

Report of the President
The Economic Report of the President is published annually and measures the
economic progress of the nation. This site allows full-text access to the
Report from 1996 to the present.

Papers of the Presidents of the United States
Use this site to search the Public Papers of the Presidents from 1991 forward.
- State
of the Union Addresses
This site provides the full-text of all State of the Union Addresses from
1992 to the present.
- Weekly
Compilation of Presidential Documents
The Weekly Compilation of Presidential Documents contains items such as presidential
statements, remarks, and messages. This site provides online access to this
weekly publication from 1993 to the present.
- White House
The main White House webpage contains information on numerous current events
as well as links to presidential speeches, press releases, and much more.

- CIA
World Factbook
The CIA World Factbook contains information on each country’s demographics,
economy, political situation, and much more. The World Factbook also contains
maps of each country.
- Library
of Congress’ Country Studies
The Library of Congress’ Country Studies provide in-depth information
on a country’s political, social, and economic characteristics. This
site contains Country Studies published between 1988 and 1998.
- State Department’s
Background Notes
Background Notes are compiled by the State Department for each country with
information such as a country’s government, history, economy, foreign
relations, and political conditions.

- FirstGov
FirstGov is the U.S. Government’s portal to online information from
all federal agencies.
- GPO Access
GPO Access, administered by the Government Printing Office, provides full-text
access to executive, legislative, and judicial documents as well as allows
users to search the Catalog of Government Publications from 1976 to the present.

- Food Safety
Food Safety is the U.S. Government’s gateway to food safety information.
- Global Health
Global Health is administered by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
and covers such topics as global health statistics and country information
as well as provides access to many reports and publications.
- Healthfinder
This site, administered by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services,
contains information on various diseases, prescription drugs, and a list of
consumer guides for various health topics.
- Household
Products Database
This database, from the National Institutes of Health and the National Library
of Medicine, contains information on the ingredients in thousands of household
products and their possible health risks.
- MedlinePlus
MedlinePlus from the National Library of Medicine provides information on
health topics from the National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes
of Health. In addition to a listing of various health topics, this site also
gives access to information on prescription drugs and a medical encyclopedia
and dictionary.
- National
Center for Health Statistic’s Fast Stats
The National Center for Health Statistic’s Fast Stats page gives statistics
on numerous public health topics.
- National Institutes of Health
The National Institutes of Health page provides information on health topics,
clinical trials, and research conducted by the NIH.
- Nutrition.gov
This site provides information on food and nutrition and includes such topics
as food safety, healthy eating, and exercise.
- U.S. Food and Drug Administration
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s extensive site contains a variety
of information from topics such as products regulated by the FDA to current
clinical trials. Electronic versions of many FDA publications are also available
here.
- USDA’s
National Nutrient Database
This site provides access to the USDA’s National Nutrient Database which
contains the nutritional value of thousands of food items, including fast
food.

The Library of Congress’ American Memory project provides online access
to materials related to all periods of American history. Available on this
site are maps, sound recordings, photographs, written documents such as letters
and diaries, and much more.

The National Science Foundation site gives access to data on science and engineering
