One of the objectives of the Kellogg Lab is to encourage interest in plant biology, and to share our knowledge and expertise with members of the local community. Here is a sampling of recent outreach activities.
February 2004 - Two Kellogg Lab post-docs, Elma Kay and Andrew Doust, served as judges for the Jackson Park Elementary School's (U. City) Science Fair. The children that submitted projects were from 1st to 5th grade. Projects could be experiments, models, inventions, collections or observational. Judges interviewed individual children or groups so as to give them a chance to explain and talk about their projects, and ask questions of real scientists. The judges evaluated projects based on things such as the background research, purpose, hypothesis, overal presentation and creativity. Each child was given a certificate of participation from the respective judges. To view a thank you letter from the Jackson Park students click here.
Work in the lab was the subject of an article in the members' magazine of the Missouri Botanical Garden, July 2002.
Toby Kellogg was quoted extensively in an article in the St. Louis Post Dispatch, June 2002, entitled "Why does grass grow?"
