J-1 On Campus Employment
As a J-1 student in a degree program, you are eligible to work on-campus a maximum of 20 hours per week during the school year and full-time (over 20 hours per week) during school breaks. On-campus includes any UMSL office or department, or at the food service businesses located on-campus. This also includes graduate or teaching assistantships. On-campus employment is a benefit for J-1 students who are in status.
J-1 Economic Need Employment Authorization
J-1 Economic Need work permission is a type of employment authorization for J-1 students who have suffered severe economic hardship due to unforeseen and unexpected economic problems.
In order to qualify for Economic Need employment authorization, you must meet the following criteria
a. You must have been a full-time student in J-1 status at UMSL for at least 1 semester
b. You must be able to prove that the circumstances which led to your economic situation were unexpected and beyond your control. Examples include evidence of substantial currency fluctuations, the unexpected loss of a graduate assistantship, or unexpected medical expenses incurred by you or your financial sponsor.
c. You must be capable of continuing full-time studies and maintaining J-1 status while engaged in Economic Need work permission.

J-1 Academic Training
J-1 Academic Training is employment that is critical or integral to a J-1 student's academic program at UMSL. Academic training must be a direct application of the student's coursework and/or research in the student's field of study. The student's academic advisor must recommend academic training as connected to the student's field of study. Academic Training can be pre-completion and post-completion of a degree program.
In order to apply for Academic Training, you must meet the following eligibility criteria:
1. You must have an offer for a qualified training position in your field of studies.
2. Your employment must not exceed 20 hours per week during the school year if you are still taking classes.
3. You must have a valid DS-2019 from UMSL and otherwise be in lawful J-1 status.
4. You must apply prior to starting the employment.
1. You must have been a full-time student and completed your program in a timely manner.
2. You must have an offer for a qualified training position in your field of studies. If you do not have a training offer, you cannot apply for academic training.
3. The position may be paid or unpaid. If the position is unpaid, you must provide financial documentation showing that you are capable of meeting your living expenses while on Academic Training.
4. You must apply for Academic Training within 30 days of completing your studies (i.e., the date you finish the work for your degree) or before your current DS-2019 expires, whichever comes first.
5. You may work either full-time or part-time while on Academic Training.

J-2 Work Authorization Application
J-2 dependents are eligible to apply for work authorization if they are able to show that the income is not necessary to support the J-1 Exchange Visitor.
