Gateway Writing Project

Since 1978, the Gateway Writing Project has sponsored summer institutes, school-based inservice programs, classroom action-research teams, and a variety of credit workshops for teachers and administrators. One of the Project's emphases has been using the computer as a tool in writing process instruction. GWP has helped many districts design computer-equipped writing centers, develop writing programs using technology, and prepare teachers to work effectively with new writing tools. A second emphasis in the Gateway Writing Project has been writing in culturally diverse settings. GWP participates in the Urban Sites Network of the National Writing Project, which supports teacher leadership, action research, and sharing successful classroom practices in the St. Louis Public Schools.

GWP is sponsored by the University of Missouri-St. Louis and Harris-Stowe State College and is the official St. Louis site of the National Writing Project. Through this institutional partnership, GWP serves teachers and students in urban, suburban, and rural districts.

GWP is an organization of, by, and for teachers of writing and strives to:

  • Improve student writing abilities by improving the teaching and learning of writing.
  • Provide professional development for classroom teachers.
  • Support teachers' own writing.
  • Promote teacher leadership.
