Prerequisite: ENG 160 or a comparable course in advanced composition.
This course is designed for prospective and inservice teachers in all content areas at the middle and high school levels.
Participants will:
- Follow the composing process in their own writing and share in workshop groups
- Read current theory and research on effective writing practice and the implications for teaching
- Share/Design classroom writing activities that foster learning the curriculum

Adolescent Literature

Instructor: Stephanie Gavin
Learn about a wide variety of high-quality adolescent literature available for reading and study in middle school and high school classes. Examine the theory and practice in reading and teaching adolescent literature with a focus on multi-cultural/multi-ethnic literature.
Participants will learn how to:
- Teach quality reader response to literature
- Give book talks
- Manage large group and small group discussions.
- Conduct small group conferences
- Select adolescent literature suitable for interdisciplinary studies as well as contemporary literature that complements the "classics"
- Promote adolescent literature as extracurricular reading
- Design lessons that integrate adolescent literature into the curriculum

Teaching Writing With Technology

Learn strategies for incorporating computer technology beyond word processing in the teaching of writing. Investigate, experiment with, and use the following: PowerPoint, Webdesign, Wikis, Twitter and Blogs, and other educational software, and multimedia programs.
