2017

Jean Dempsey

GWP 2017 Liaison

I teach English as a Second Language in an Academic English setting. The driving philosophy behind the program where I teach is "fluency first." In other words, we want to get students reading, writing, speaking, and listening as much as possible, and have them worry about improving accuracy and sophistication later. I love what I do and where I teach, but I do sometimes feel like we're throwing students into the deep end of a pool and telling them to swim. My experience at the GWP Summer Institute has helped me learn strategies for breaking writing down into manageable tasks. I also learned about the importance of modeling good writing and inviting students to "notice" and imitate, rather than relying too heavily on drills and rote memorization. It's been a wonderful experience!!

Tara Reiner

GWP 2017 Teacher Consultant

My background is in occupational therapy and special education. I began my career as a school based OT and then went into teaching after graduate school. I have taught in a variety of settings in mostly urban elementary schools and also have served as an elementary and middle school occupational therapist in several cities. I am very grateful to the Gateway Writing Project for expanding my ability as a writer and teacher and my overall knowledge of writing practices. This will forever impact my work with students.

Laura Dobbs

GWP 2017 Teacher Consultant

Good teachers don't teach English or math or science; good teachers teach students. I've only been teaching for two years, but I spent many years before that in one type of tutoring setting or another. GWP has reinvigorated not only my personal love of writing, but also my love for teaching. I can't wait to start the school year and put some of the new ideas and strategies I've learned into practice!
