2012 - 2014

Bethany Kjellesvik

GWP 2014 Liaison

While my thinking primarily follows a linear, concrete pattern, every encounter with the GWP reminds me that genuine, quality writing cannot be relegated to a formula; rather, it presents an experience in which students need guidance and freedom to explore possibilities and encouragement to develop their own perspectives and voice. Writing is a powerful medium through which students can wrestle with big ideas, grow their critical thinking, and shape their understanding of the world. The GWP continues to shape my understanding of who I am as a writer and how I can grow my students into confident writers as well.

2014 Teacher Consultant

I am a writer, an educator, and a researcher. I LOVE to learn and teach – it’s unbelievable how many things I feel passionate about. My BS is in engineering, my MA is in TESOL, and my PhD is in education (instructional technology). I am a MO certified math teacher (grades 5-12). I have been an educator (teacher, tutor, & instructor) for 15 years now. I am an English/Persian bilingual, and love to learn about new languages and cultures. There never seems to be enough time to check off all the things on my list. I care about my students and I expect a lot of them. I love taking pictures of my two children.

Tim Woodcock

2014 Teacher Consultant

Currently I teach in a fairly traditional and academically rigorous private school, but have previously taught in an urban charter school and a rural parochial school, as well as adjuncting at St. Louis University. In all of those contexts I have found that giving students a sense of audience, and a real rationale as to why any of this matters, are the keys in taking their writing and thinking up to the next level. The summer institute was a formative influence on my style of teaching, and it would be a rare week in which in GWP did not have a discernible and positive impact on how I teach.
