2009 - 2011

Troy Kozak

    GWP 2011 Liaison

I believe that students need to have the room and the approval from teachers to create and academically play. We serve as guides to help them with their educational and writing goals. I feel like I do my best work when having a conversation with a student where we question a thought or a response, and try to understand something new through that process.

Caroline Hackmeyer

GWP 2010 Liaison

The GWP community and philosophy helped me survive beyond the early years of teaching and empowered me to thrive as a classroom teacher. The Summer Institute transformed my approach to teaching writing and started my love affair with an open, creative writing workshop model that makes room for student-writers to explore themselves, their process, and their ideas.

Writing is thinking. In the classroom, writing should not be used only to demonstrate learning of a subject, but should also be used to deepen students' understanding of any subject during the learning process. As a teacher, I am committed to help both students and other teachers see themselves as writers and use the writing process to share their thinking. I am proud to join with other GWP teacher consultants in promoting writing communities in our area. GWP is still instrumental in making me a better teacher through collaboration and inquiry into best writing practices.

Cathy O'Brien

GWP 2009 Liaison

I began writing as soon as I learned to string together sentences, using a piece of notebook paper and a #2 pencil on the coffee table in the living room of my family's home. Stories are everywhere and the methods of sharing them are vast and varied. The Gateway Writing Project inspired me to encourage self-expression in my students, and now in the artists with whom I work, through all discovered (and maybe even some undiscovered) mediums in a world where independent thinking and ideas are important and necessary.
