First, I fell in love with books. Later, I fell in love with the classroom. I wake up every day and get to combine the two. I believe in meeting kids where they're at to try and re/kindle a love of words and story.

Dominic Geinosky Pioter

GWP 2007 Liaison

The Gateway Writing Project has had the single most influential presence in my career as an English teacher. After spending my early years as a teacher reading academic texts from Nancie Atwell, Donald Murray, Tom Romano, and Carol Jago, I found in GWP a real life community of passionate and innovative teachers right in my city. I owe a lot of my professional confidence and educational risk taking to the PD and the friendships I've made through GWP.
These days I am keeping busy with my young son, Jude, my slam poetry writing notebook, and my ever-growing tower of books on my bedside table.

Christopher Marino

 2007 Teacher Consultant

My name is Christopher Marino and I have been teaching since 2006. I got involved with Gateway almost immediately so I consider myself heavily influenced by the program. I loved it. I especially liked the approach to nurturing writing and reading communities. Right now I feel like I have won the lottery. I'm in a district that values Reader's and Writer's workshop and I only have 44 students. This allows me to reader and respond to more student writing than I ever have.

Lisa Giljum-Jansky

GWP 2007 Teacher Consultant

I began teaching in 2001 and found "my professional home," when I did the Summer Institute in 2007. I didn't necessarily feel lost before the institute, but I most definitely found myself and my community that summer. To be understood while also challenged is a beautiful balance. My GWP experiences and friends remind me of who I am and who I want to be, not only as a teacher but as a person.

LeeAnne Stevens Vest

GWP 2006 Teacher Consultant

I still love teaching after 22 years in the classroom. I have found that the students are what keep me happy and wanting to go to school. I believe it is this love of my students and the excitement of trying new ideas that keeps teaching fresh and fun even after teaching a long time. Gateway Writing Project is dear to my heart because it is a way for teachers to deeply immerse themselves into writing and connect with others doing the same thing. I loved my summer group!
