Significant Points

* Many jobs in water transportation occupations require a mariner's document or a license from the U.S. Coast Guard.

* Merchant mariners on ocean going ships are hired for various periods ranging from a single voyage to several continuous voyages and may be away from home continuously for months.

* Due to a declining ocean going fleet, there is keen competition for jobs aboard ocean going vessels and merchant mariners usually have to wait many months to find work.
