Data for Occupations Not Studied in Detail

Employment in the approximately 250 occupations covered in detail in the main body of the Handbook accounts for about 114 million or 86 percent of all jobs in the economy. Although occupations covering the full spectrum of work are included, those requiring lengthy education or training are generally given the most attention. This chapter presents summary data on 73 additional occupations, for which employment projections are prepared, but for which detailed occupational information is not developed. These occupations account for about 5 percent of all jobs. For each occupation, a brief description of the nature of work, the number of jobs in 1996, a phrase describing the projected employment change from 1996 to 2006, and the most significant source of training are presented. For guidelines to interpreting the description of projected employment change, refer to an earlier chapter, Occupational Information Included in the Handbook. The approximately 9 percent of all jobs not covered either in the detailed occupational descriptions in the main body of the Handbook or in the summary data presented in this chapter are mainly residual categories, such as "all other management support workers," for which little meaningful information could be developed.
