Occupational Information Network Coverage

The Occupational Information Network (O*NET), which replaced the Dictionary of Occupational Titles, is used by public employment service offices to classify and place jobseekers. The O*NET was developed by job analysts. The information on job duties, knowledge and skills, education and training, and other occupational characteristics comes directly from workers and employers. The O*NET reflects the 2000 Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) system. With 822 detailed occupations, the SOC represents the Federal Government’s most recent effort to analyze the occupational structure in the United States and to provide a universal occupational classification system. Occupational statements in this 2006-07 edition of the Handbook list the O*NET codes that relate to, or match the definitions used in, the Bureau's Occupational Employment Statistics (OES) survey—the principal source of occupational employment data in the Handbook. All numbers listed also appear in the table below. The table is arranged by the O*NET/SOC code, followed by the O*NET/SOC title. The O*NET/SOC title provides a link to the corresponding Handbook statement.
