Deutschland im Herbst	Germany in Autumn	791 DEU	Germany in Autumn does not have a plot per se; it mixes documentary footage, along with standard movie scenes, to give the audience the mood of Germany during the late 1970s. The movie covers the two month time period during 1977 when a businessman was kidnapped, and later murdered, by the left-wing terrorists known as the RAF-Rote Armee Fraktion (Red Army Faction). The businessman had been kidnapped in an effort to secure the release of the orginal leaders of the RAF, also known as the Baader-Meinhof gang. When the kidnapping effort and a plane hijacking effort failed, the three most prominent leaders of the RAF, Andreas Baader, Gudrun Enslin, and Jean-Carl Raspe, all committed suicide in prison. It has become an article of faith within the left-wing community that these three were actually murdered by the state. The movie has several vignettes, including an extended set of scenes with the famous director Rainer Werner Fassbinder discussing his feelings about Germany's political situation at the time. Fassbinder's scenes almost seem to be candid documentary footage, but aren't. Other scenes include documentary footage of the joint funeral of Baader, Enslin, and Raspe. When it was made in 1976, four of the original members of the group were still alive to tell their story: bass Robert Biberti, spending a well-off pensioner's life in Berlin; pianist Erwin Bootz, making his living as a musician for TV productions etc.; baritone Roman Cycowski, then a cantor at a San Francisco synagogue and the last member of the group to die (in the late 1990s); and tenor Ari Leschnikoff, living in poverty in a run-down tenement in his native Sofia, Bulgaria. They, as well as close relatives and friends of the groups other two members, founder Harry Frommermann and Erich A. Collin, give a first-hand account of the origin, the rise and the demise of the group, including the bickering, rivalries and jealousies - and the nasty post-war litigation - among them. Viewers may find that though the restrictions put on the group by the Nazis (Frommermann, Collin and Cycowski were Jewish - though Collin only by Nazi definition) were certainly the main cause for their breakup, their clash of complex personalities (especially between genius arranger Frommermann and Biberti, who comes across as rather egocentric) might ultimately have led to the same result. What's left of them is some of the finest popular music ever produced, music which can still cheer you up or make you sad today just like it could 70 years ago. Through this documentary, we learn more about the personalities behind the music than we may ever know about most of today's pop stars. The first third of the movie plays as a comedy of the inside shenanigans of how such a group would behave. The movie's tone turns grim and critical when the group playfully kills a low-level banker in a robbery. Especially controversial was the fictional film's showing cooperation between German terrorists and industrialists. Fassbinder premiered the movie at Cannes, 1 month before the real RAF tried to assassinate NATO head Alexander Haig. So ein Flegel		791 So	The 2nd adaptation of Heinrich Spoerl's novel (Die Feuerzangenbowle, 1944, q.v.) is a much more well-known classic Heinz Rühmann vehicle than this first intelligently written adaptation. That is a pity as this funny and sometimes hilarious adaptation is much better. By adding a brother to the main character Pfeiffer (giving Rühmann the opportunity to play a double role) not only the story is expanded and given a better foundation, as a result the action of the film is made more plausible and the comedy is enriched as now half the film concerns the pupil Pfeiffer who has to find his way in his brother's place as a writer. The writers also added a couple of fine ideas like e.g. the superb scenes of the dancing classes and the visit to the World Panorama. Robert Stemmle directed with firm hand and a good feeling for (timing of) comedy and made the whole thing into a playful and lighthearted cinematic treat; compare this to the heavy-handed 1944 version. Rühmann is great and knows to play the brothers of opposite character convincing; his timing is excellent. Fine supporting cast including Oskar Sima who is very good and Rudolf Platte who has (again) only a bit part as the dancing master, but makes him into a hilarious eccentric you are not likely to forget.	1934	Comedy	Robert A. Based on the well-publicized Baader-Meinhof terrorists, it is the tale of five terrorists who were brought to trial and accused of the murder of four United States servicemen in a terrorist bombing. One of the defendants dies of malnutrition after a hunger strike. A second dies of apparent suicide, leaving only three defendants at the time of the trial. The trial itself was almost travesty in that everything from defense attorneys who would abide by no rules, the presiding judge being removed and defense attorneys and prosecutors switching with almost daily regularity happened during this long and complicated court battle. Und Ewig singen die Wälder		791 Und	Family feuds, nature, destructive jealousy, waterfalls, you name it, it is here in this well-done adaptation of the Trygve Gulbranssen novel. You have to be a fan of this trashy literature to fully appreciate the film, but both Paul May and the cast took it seriously and do a convincing job. There are some scenes (Like the transport of the trees via the waterfall) that make this a slightly above-average film; the cinematography of the countryside, the mountains and the waterfall is nice, but indoor cinematography is mainly flat.
