Credit Card Policy

State funding for higher education in Missouri has been substantially reduced in recent years.This change in the funding equation has made it necessary for the University to closelyexamine all of our business processes, including the way we collect student accounts and the expenses we incur in processing those payments.

As part of our ongoing effort to provide excellence in education, the University has focused on our costs to process credit card payments. These costs are in excess of $2,000,000 per year; therefore, we have decided that,beginning in January of 2006, the Cashier's offices will no longer accept credit card payments on student accounts.

The University has contracted with a third-party processor to accept payments by MasterCard and Discover over the Internet for those who choose to pay by credit card. This processor is required to be compliant with all Payment Card Industry (PCI) standards and governmental regulations for securing sensitive information. Student information will not be used or shared beyond the actual credit card payment transaction.

There are three primary changes that will take place as a result of this decision:

  • Our third-party vendor will only accept MasterCard and Discover credit cards. Visa branded credit cards will no longer be accepted for payments on the student account. PIN based debit cards of any type will be accepted in the Cashier's Office.
  • The Cashier's office will no longer accept credit card payments directly – all
    credit card payments must be made over the Internet. Those payments can be made from any computer that is connected to the internet. Terminals will be available in and near the Cashier's office.
  • Our third-party vendor will add a service charge of 2.75% (subject to change) to all payments made on a student's account using MasterCard or Discover credit cards.

Of course, the University of Missouri will continue to offer students and parents the option to make payments in cash, check, PIN based debit cards, or by e-check via the Internet, without incurring additional charges. Here are the billing and payment website addresses for each campus:

Parents or others who will be making payments on the student account must be added to the system as "Authorized Users." Only the student can add an Authorized user to his/her account by logging on to the websites listed above.
