External Scholarships

In addition to UMSL scholarships, there are a variety of outside sources where you may find scholarship funds available. Below you will find several resources to get you started. Be sure to read all information carefully because they may offer additional suggestions to aid you in your search.

1. Apply early, apply often
When you complete the UMSL scholarship application, it will apply to multiple scholarships. However, outside scholarship applications usually have a 1:1 ratio, which means you will most likely have to complete a separate application for each scholarship. Also, be sure to give yourself ample time to apply. Ideally, you should be searching for scholarships up to a year in advance.

2. Complete the application entirely
Follow all instructions given in the application and answer all questions completely. Review the application more than once to make sure all fields have been completed and that all answers are accurate.

3. The Dreaded Essay
Don’t skip a scholarship application because it requires an essay. These applications have a statistically lower response rate which increases your chances of being awarded the scholarship. By applying for scholarships early, you will give yourself time to write a clear, intelligent essay.

Keep these things in mind when writing:

Your essay should grab the reader’s attention from the first sentence so think of a way to spark interest immediately.
Your essay should be grammatically flawless. Give it to a teacher or tutor to look over for mistakes and misspellings before you submit it.
Be sure to answer the question that is asked. Keep your writing focused and on point but also take the opportunity to highlight your accomplishments as they pertain to the question.

Many smaller scholarships may not have websites for you to visit for information. Here are a few places you can visit for more information.

Any Clubs/Organizations in which you or your parents are members
Your parents' employer(s)

Electronic Resources

There are plenty of resources online for you to find scholarships, but be careful about what information you divulge when you apply. Check to make sure the organization is reputable and legitimate and never give out any banking information for any scholarship. Also, check the Federal Trade Commission’s website and this USNews article regarding online scholarship scams as well as red flags for things you should avoid.
