Position Description
Practice Co-Director,
Center for Ethics in Public Life
The Practice Co-Director of the Center for Ethics in Public Life is a distinguished individual with demonstrated experience with, and personal commitment to, the highest standards of effective leadership in public service and professional ethics who will serve as Co-Director of the newly established Center for Ethics in Public Life. The Center, created with funding from the Missouri State Legislature, was established to provide ethics education and resources to those engaged in public service and to conduct research on issues of ethics in public policy and administrative settings, especially at the state and local government levels. The Practice and Academic Co-Directors work together to manage the Center administratively and offer educational and outreach programming to the public and public officials and direct the outreach and practice functions of the Center. The Co-Directors report administratively to the Provost.
Responsibilities of this position include:
- Providing strategic leadership and administrative oversight of the Center on a shared basis with the academic co-director.
- Working with the academic co-director as well as the Faculty and Community Advisory Committees in determining the direction and substance of Center activities.
- Representing the Center to public officials and members of the public at the state and local government levels.
- Working intensively with public officials at various levels of state and local government to develop continuing education programs, workshops and conferences, and supportive services that are applicable and timely.
- Leading the outreach functions of the Center to elected and appointed public officials, including members of state and local legislative bodies, and members of the public.
- Researching and developing materials for use in training and outreach.
- Working collaboratively with other units on campus such as the Center for Character and Citizenship and the Public Policy Research Center (PPRC) on research, curricular development, outreach, and other projects that further the missions of each unit.
- Developing and successfully implementing a plan to secure external funding to help support and maintain the research and outreach missions of the Center.
We are particularly interested in candidates engaged in research and development activities related to the role of ethics in the conduct of elective and appointive public office and public policy and management.
The ideal candidate will have at least an academic degree and 10 or more years of professional experience in an appropriate field, preferably in elected, appointed, or career public service or an appropriate combination of academic education and experience. As the Center for Ethics in Public Life will actively engage academic units on campus in carrying out its mission, knowledge of and skills in working in an academic environment are highly desirable. This is a full-time administrative position, although a part-time or courtesy academic appointment in an appropriate department may be possible depending on qualifications and interest. The Practice Co-Directorâ's administrative performance will be reviewed annually by the Provost.
