Academic Co-Director,
Center for Ethics in Public Life
The Academic Co-Director of the recently established Center for Ethics in Public Life is a distinguished scholar having demonstrated experience with, and personal commitment to, the highest standards of effective leadership in public service and professional ethics. Candidates must have an earned doctorate and be eligible for tenure in Political Science, Public Policy Administration or other relevant discipline. The Center, created with funding from the Missouri State Legislature, provides ethics education and resources to those engaged in public service and conducts research on issues of ethics in public policy and administrative settings, especially at the state and local government levels. The Academic and Practice Co-Directors work together to manage the Center administratively and offer educational and outreach programming to the public and public officials and engage in research. The Co-Directors report administratively to the Provost.
Responsibilities of this position include:
- Providing strategic leadership and administrative oversight of the Center on a shared basis with the practice co-director.
- Working with the practice co-director and the Faculty and Community Advisory Committees in determining the direction and substance of Center activities.
- Representing the Center to public officials and members of the public at the state and local government levels.
- Engaging in and promoting research and scholarship on public service ethics.
- Developing curricula and courses on the ethical dimensions of political office and public administration including courses for academic credit and for continuing education.
- Working collaboratively with other units on campus such as the Center for Character and Citizenship and the Public Policy Research Center (PPRC) on research, curricular development, outreach, and other projects that further the missions of each unit.
- Working intensively with public officials at various levels of state and local government to develop instruction and supportive services that are applicable and timely, disseminate the research findings, and integrate them into Center activities.
- Developing and successfully implementing a plan to secure external funding to help support and maintain the research and outreach missions of the Center.
- Engaging in research and development activities related to the role of ethics in the conduct of elective and appointive public office and public policy and management.
The position will be structured as a half-time administrative and half-time academic appointment with a teaching load of two courses per academic year in the appropriate discipline. The Academic Co-Director's administrative performance will be reviewed annually by the Provost in addition to a regular annual review as a faculty member in the appropriate college/department.
