Department of Athletics

The Department of Athletics provides student-athletes with an opportunity to compete at the collegiate level. From the 1973 National Championship win in men’s soccer to homecoming games in the fall, the athletic department strives to promote a sense of campus spirit and unity.

Athletics competes at the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division II level and is a member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The department sponsors 11 athletic programs including women’s basketball, golf, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball and men’s baseball, basketball, golf, soccer and tennis. UMSL recently dedicated the new basketball court at the Mark Twain Building to former athletic director, Charles "Chuck" Smith.

In order to maintain a high quality athletic program, UMSL must provide scholarships, uniforms and travel funds for the student-athletes. Immediate funding needs include the construction of a new baseball field on the South Campus. Alumni, corporations and friends are essential to the advancement of these, and other, athletic initiatives at UMSL.
