Course for Academic Credit: Scholarship of Teaching & Learning (ENGL 5950) Tuesdays, 4:00-6:30 PM, Dr. Sally Ebest, Instructor – starts Spring 2010:

This seminar introduces theories of reading, writing, and thinking; engages students in the strategies and methodologies of qualitative classroom research; teaches students to analyze qualitative research data to refine and refresh pedagogical practice; and emphasizes research in effective pedagogical practices within students’ disciplines. Graduate students will be responsible for finding, critiquing, and presenting pedagogical essays within their disciplines. The final project will be a collaborative classroom research project which students will design, critique, and conduct throughout the semester. (3 credit hours; counts as Units 2 and 3)

A. To get ready for the job market, complete three two-hour workshops (one Friday per month from 1:00-3:00 PM in SSB 449):

March 5, Preparing and Presenting Your Job Talk
April 9, Writing GrantsB. To prepare for campus visits, attend the etiquette banquet (compliments of the Graduate School) October 22, 2009.
C. To add to your skills, attend a colloquium or seminar offered by the CTL. Submit a one-page summary describing the program and reflecting on what you learned; submit with your teaching portfolio.
D. To determine the type of campus where you want to work, participate in mentoring (we will help you arrange this visit). For at least one day, shadow a mentor in your discipline on a campus in the St. Louis area or the UM system. In your teaching portfolio, include a reflective, 2-3 page paper describing your experiences and how they did or did not meet your expectations. Shadowing includes attending classes and committee meetings to gain an understanding of differing environments and expectations at public and private, graduate and undergraduate, research and non-research, two-year and four-year colleges and universities.
