Cornell Format Note-Taking

The Cornell Format is an easy way to gather and organize information to be learned. It also saves time because it speeds learning of information that may appear on quizzes and exams. A third benefit of using the Cornell Format is the ability to self-test on material prior to exams.

The Cornell Format is set up by:
. On loose-leave binder paper, draw a vertical line the length of the page about 1/3 of the way from the left margin (about 3 inches).
. Turn main points from lectures and readings into questions and place to the left of the vertical line.
. Answers are formed out of the details given to explain main ideas and placed on the right side of the vertical line.
. Use only the front side of the sheet of paper and be sure to date and number each page.

How to recite and review with the Cornell Format

. Read a question aloud with the answer column covered.

. Recite the answer aloud as completely as possible from memory, as if lecturing a class. (In a future review, you can put answers in writing.)

. Check the accuracy of the answer.

. If recited correctly, move on to the next main idea in your notes.

. If answer not recalled correctly, look at it and read it aloud. Reread and recite until you can answer the question from memory. Place a check mark in PENCIL next to the item to indicate that you have not learned this answer yet.

. Review the check marked "don't know" material at least every other day. Review "learned" material every 2-3 days to keep the information fresh.
