Strategies
for Success While Attending UM-St. Louis
Your UM-St. Louis Bulletin is your guidebook to the university. Know where
you can access important information in this book. Once you have chosen
a field of study, carefully read the information on your major in the Bulletin.
You are responsible for knowing your degree requirements.
Each semester
you will receive pre-registration appointment times via your University
e-mail account. New students will still receive registration information
via U.S. mail. The longer you wait to register, the less chance you have
of getting the classes you want on the days and times you prefer.
Refer
to the General Fee Information available from the Cashier's
Office and located with the online course schedules. It is important to become familiar with the university's
policy regarding reassessment. The Fee Reassessment Schedule explains how much money
you will still owe the university depending on the date you drop classes.
Remember, this policy is strictly enforced. If you do not take a minute
to review it, you could lose money!!
Get involved in student organizations on
campus by visiting Student Life, 366 MSC (314.516.5291). Prospective employers are not just interested in the education
you have, but in the experience you have in your field of study and in
your level of campus involvement.
Visit the University's web site Choosing
a Major. This site is designed to help you think about degree options. If you need further assistance in choosing your major, please see a Student Development Coordinator in the Center for Student Success, 225 MSC (314.516.5300).
To avoid
potential academic disaster, always remember:
Seek advising
assistance when you are experiencing academic difficulty Talk to faculty
concerning problems you are facing in class Pay close attention
to course syllabi Attend class
While
in pursuit of your degree, consider early on whether obtaining a minor
and/or a certificate is something of interest. Though minors and certificates
are not mandatory, they can help you to enhance or compliment career/academic
goals.
When selecting
elective classes, choose those that are interesting and those that compliment
your degree program. It is not always best to opt for what you believe
to be the least demanding classes.
Visit
the Career Services Office 278 MSC (314.516.5111) early. Career Specialists
can help you with job search strategies and resume development.
Specialized student services are available to all eligible students with disabilities. When a student with a disability is admitted to the University, it is the student's responsibility to notify the Administrator for Special Programs in the Disability Access Services Office, 144 MSC (314.516.6554).
