MERCANTILE LIBRARY ACQUIRES HISTORIC HOLIDAY COLLECTION

Historic holiday collection

The St. Louis Mercantile Library has announced the acquisition of a historic collection of holiday memorabilia and literature. Through sale treaties and auctions the last two years, the library acquired the Jock Elliott Collection of Christmas Literature and Art. "Arguably this was one of the most comprehensive collections of the 20th century on Christmas customs in private hands," said John Hoover, director of the library. The collection includes: the first printed image of a Christmas tree; first printing of Clement Moore's "A Visit from St. Nicholas" in book form under the poet's name; earliest artistic images of our conception of Santa Claus by Thomas Nast and Felix Darley; and signed first editions of important works of children's literature. Plans are under way, Hoover said, for an exhibit and illustrated catalogue in 2008 that will show the collection in the context of the library's other historical collections.
