Africa World Documentary
Film Festival - October 2007

| CIS Calendar |

Greetings,

Welcome to the Inaugural E. Desmond Lee Africa World Documentary Film Festival, sponsored by the E. Desmond Lee Professorship in African/African-American Studies, Centre for International Studies at the University of Missouri, Saint Louis.

Through the art of documentary filmmaking, the AWDFF is committed to the promotion of knowledge, life and culture, of the people of Africa worldwide.   In this inaugural year we shall be presenting 68 films submitted by filmmakers from Brazil, Cuba, United Kingdom, Australia, Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, USA, Germany, Trinidad & Tobago, Ethiopia, Somalia, Senegal, Uganda, Liberia, Tanzania, Spain, Norway,  Netherlands, Eritrea, France, Israel and Canada.

To this end, we celebrate and congratulate the extraordinary group of talented filmmakers who have employed their craft and skills in the exploration of African subjects.  The majority of  issues covered in these works are:  Womanism; Hip-Hop;  HIV; Wars in Africa; Immigration and African Communities in the USA;  Drug Addiction; The Civil Rights Movement;  African Drum and Dance; Spirituality; Carnival; African Religions in the Caribbean and Latin America.

My plethora of appreciation to the Centre for International Studies, especially Dr. Joel Glassman, Mr. Terry Williams, and essentially Mr. Ephrem Andemariam, the festival coordinator.  He has toiled into the dawn hours on several occasions as we sorted through the over 200 submissions to refine and program our festival.

I shall be remiss if I did not also extend appreciation to my colleagues in the  Department of Theatre, Dance and Media Studies for all the technical support.

Enjoy the Festival

‘Niyi Coker,  Jr.
E. Desmond Lee Professor
Festival Director.
