E. Desmond Lee Global Ethnic Collaborative
The most profound hallmark of the new millennium will be the increasing interdependence of our world. In St. Louis, international business accounts for a growing number of jobs and immigrants make up a large percentage of those moving into the region. It is time to change our view of the world and our place in it - to envision ours as an emerging global city.The new global landscape challenges us to contend with an increasingly open and competitive international economy, to appreciate cultural diversity at home and abroad, and to understand the local impacts of international events. Our plans for this region should include these global challenges and opportunities and the key role that our ethnic diversity can play in meeting those challenges.
Working with St. Louis' ethnic and international organizations, the E. Desmond Lee Global Ethnic Collaborative gives our region a powerful vehicle for:
- Assessing the impact and the challenges of "globalization:"
- Mobilizing our community's resources, its ethnic groups, civic and international organizations, and economic development organizations; and
- Articulating the common goals that can help guide us as we work together to build a more international city, one that will prosper in the "global millennium."
Based in the Center for International Studies at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, the Collaborative offers conferences, workshops, cultural events and performances that:
- Enhance awareness of and respect for the region's rich ethnic heritage:
- Identify and nurture fresh voices and visions promoting cultural harmony;
- Focus greater attention on the local dimensions of global affairs; and
- Prepare St. Louis to design the strategies and mobilize the resources needed to play a leadership role in a globally interdependent world.
The Collaborative also sponsors activities that strengthen existing and build new international linkages for St. Louis.
