East Asian Studies Certificate Requirements

  1. First- and Second-year Chinese, Japanese, or other appropriate Asian language (20 hours taken in four semesters). Basic Chinese and Japanese courses are offered on the University of Missouri-St. Louis campus. Advanced Chinese and Japanese language courses are available through Washington University for University of Missouri-St. Louis students.
  2. History 1041 and History 1042, East Asian Civilization
  3. One course in three of the following six areas, a total of nine hours:

    Area 1: Anthropology
    2110, Cultures of Asia

    Area 2: Art
    1109, The Art of China
    1110, The Art of Japan
    4408, Topics in Asian Art

    Area 3: History
    3101, Modern Japan: 1850 to Present
    3102, Modern China: 1800 to Present
    4004, Senior Seminar (when appropriate to East Asia)

    Area 4: Music
    1080, Non-Western Music I
    1090, Non-Western Music II

    Area 5: Philosophy
    1120, Asian Philosophy

    Area 6: Political Science
    2550 East Asian Politics
    3590, Studies in Comparative Politics (when appropriate to East Asia)
    3890, Studies in International Relations (when appropriate to East Asia)

  4. Independent Study Course: Students seeking the certificate must complete an independent study course (three hours) in which a research paper will be written focusing upon some aspect of East Asian studies. The topic should be approved in advance by the Center for International Studies.
