United Nations Day Contest

How to Enter:

To enter, please complete a copy of the Entry Form for each submission. This contest is only open to UMSL students, and the entry form will require you to log in using your UMSL Google Apps credentials. Please refer to this page for more information on Google Apps at UMSL.

You may submit one entry per contest category.

Please note the different labeling and formatting requirements for submissions in each category explained below and in the entry form. 



Judging:

Entries in each category will be judged according to the criteria listed below.


Artwork entries:

Purpose: Entries in the artwork competition should draw attention to and promote the celebration of United Nations Day as a world holiday.

Criteria: Artwork will be judged on the following:

  • Medium - Including but not limited to posters, photography, bumper stickers, collages, graphic designs, paintings, statues, et cetera
  • Creativity - Content and design
  • Attention to detail - Proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation
  • Each work must include the words “United Nations Day,” “October 24,” and “Annual World Holiday.”
  • With the exception of the United Nations emblem and flag, all designs must be original; no use of service marked or trademarked design elements can be included.

Submission: Please complete a copy of the entry form for all submissions.

Please bring your original artwork to 304 SSB by the contest deadline. All artwork submissions must be physical prints or objects unless the work can only exist digitally. For printing services, please contact the UMSL Print Shop, Art Department, or the print shop of your choice.

Please note that the office is only open 9-5, M-F.

Please label your original artwork only with a title. Enter the title and a short description (100 words or less) of your work in the appropriate field on the entry form. The description is only for purposes of identification and will not be judged as a component of your work.


Essay entries:

Purpose: Entries in the essay competition should draw attention to the UN, its history, its mission, and its role in the world.

Criteria: Essays will be judged on the following:

  • Content - What is United Nations Day? Why is it important to observe United Nations Day? How does observing United Nations Day benefit the world? What can you do to increase awareness of United Nations Day?
  • Style - Well-written, well-documented, well-conceived
  • Attention to detail - Proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation
  • 1000 word maximum length

 Submission: Please complete a copy of the entry form for all submissions.

Please upload your essay as a PDF using the entry form.

All essay submissions must include a cover page with the following information:

Essay Title
Name
UMSL Email
UMSL Student ID #

Do not include any identifying information on any pages of your entry except for the cover page.


Website Design entries: 

Purpose: Entries in the website design competition should inform and educate the audience about United Nations Day.

Criteria: Websites will be judged on the following:

  • Content – How does the website raise awareness about UN Day? Why is it important to celebrate UN Day?
  • Style – This includes design and functionality. With the exception of the United Nations emblem and flag, all designs must be original; no use of service marked or trademarked design elements can be included.
  • Attention to detail - Is the content accurate? Is the site free of spelling and grammatical errors? Are sources adequately cited?
  • Cross-platform operability – Your site should be accessible by multiple browsers, operating systems, and devices.

Submission: Please complete a copy of the entry form for all submissions.

Please enter the URL of your website in the appropriate field on the entry form. Your website can be hosted anywhere, but it cannot be modified after submission.

Do not include any personally identifying information on your website entry.



Other Information:

Each category must have a minimum of three submissions for judging to proceed. Once the minimum number of submissions is received, each category will be judged by a separate panel of at least three judges. If fewer than three submissions are received for any category, the judges for that category may award prizes to any entries deemed worthy of recognition.

The winners will be announced to all entrants via email and social media after judging for all categories has been completed. 

You will need to fill out a separate entry form for each submission, one for each category.
