Section 14: Health and Insurance
The purpose of the athletic training room is to work for the prevention of athletic injuries, care for those that occur and accomplish complete recovery through rehabilitation so the athlete can return to competition safely and as quickly as possible. Early detection of a possible problem is essential. Reporting Injuries Report all injuries, illnesses, cuts, abrasions and etc. to a trainer as soon as possible. If an injury occurs during a practice and there is no trainer present, your coach will summon one. Please be cooperative at all times. Whenever an athlete needs to see a physician, a staff trainer will make appropriate arrangements. Training Room Procedures 1. You must sign in every time you enter the training room. 2. The training room is a very busy place. Unless you are being treated or taped, please stay out of the training room so that the trainers can work more efficiently to take care of those who need attention. 3. Report to the training room early enough to be treated before practice. Trainers are available at least one hour before your practice starts. 4. There will be no horseplay in the training room. Help us to help you by keeping the noise to a minimum. Be ready when it is your turn to be taped or treated. 5. You are responsible for ankle wraps, ace bandages, pads or other equipment given to you by a trainer. Please bring the items to the training room with you. This equipment will be checked out to you, and you are responsible for the return of the articles to the training room.
All student-athletes must be declared eligible and have a physical examination before being issues equipment and before practicing and competing for any UM-St. Louis athletic team. Physical Examination Procedures 1. The head coach or appointed assistant coach must give a complete list of those candidates wishing to compete in a sport to the Athletic Director and the trainer. 2. The head trainer will send physical forms to each student-athlete. It is their responsibility to have them completed, and return them to the athletic trainer prior to their first practice. 3. Any athlete failing to obtain a passing physical WILL NOT be permitted to participate until a physical examination is complete and the trainer has received authorization. 4. An athlete who does not pass their physical and requires special tests will be responsible for the costs of these tests.
The athletic department attempts to provide our athletes with the very best possible care and coverage. In the even of an athletic-related accident, your parents will receive a letter of instruction detailing proper procedure in filing claims. You must have on file an insurance form detailing your insurance coverage. To participate in athletics you MUST provide proof of your health insurance. Athletic Insurance 1. Athletic Insurance is a secondary coverage only, payable after claims have been submitted to parents’ primary carrier and a copy of Explanation of Benefits (showing partial payment, applied to deductible, etc.) has been received by the Athletic Department. 2. The NCAA does not permit any college or university to provide coverage or pay bills incurred for expenses that are not sustained as the direct result of an accident in the intercollegiate athletic program. 3. Athletic related claims are handled through Lawrence E. Smith and Company, Inc. 4. This program is at no cost to the student and automatically covers athletes listed on the team roster. All accidents must occur during NCAA regulated practice and season. Pre-existing conditions are excluded from coverage. 5. To be eligible for coverage, the athletic trainer must refer athletes. 6. Coverage extends for a 104-week period from the date of injury. 7. Pre-existing conditions involving injuries to athletes prior to their arrival at UM-St. Louis CANNOT be financially covered by the UM-St. Louis athletic program. This is due to NCAA rules and regulations and those of our insurance carrier. We will however do everything we can to treat and rehabilitate these injuries, and keep all medical costs as low as possible. These injuries will be discussed at the pre-season meeting. 8. We will be billing athlete’s insurance for rehabilitation provided in the athletic training room. We will write off deductibles and no out of pocket payments will be made. Contact the training room if you have any questions.
