The
2007 UMSL Sports Hall of Fame inductees include: Jenni (Burton)
Anderson (soccer), Jim Goessling (basketball), Hubert Hoosman
(basketball), Jim Lockett (baseball), Dan Muesenfechter (soccer),
Chris Sanders (golf), Tim Smith (soccer), and Rich Meckfessel
(basketball coach). These eight individuals join the 44 previous
members who have been inducted in the UMSL Sports Hall of Fame,
which was started in 2001. Below is information on the eight
inductees for 2007:
Jenni
(Burton) Anderson – Women’s Soccer
Jenni played three seasons at UMSL, from 1993 through 1995,
earning all-region honors all three years and was named an All-American
selection in 1995. She is UMSL’s all-time scoring leader
with 151 career points on 65 goals and 21 assists. Her 65 career
goals are also a school record and she holds the school record
with 22 game-winning goals. Jennifer holds the top three spots
in the record books for most goals scored in a season, with
her best year coming in 1995 when she scored 23 goals, setting
another school single season record with 55 points.
Jim
Goessling – Men’s Basketball
Jim played four years on the men’s basketball team from
1973 to 1977. He ranks sixth in the career records for most
rebounds with 732, and as a senior had 300 total rebounds, the
fourth best single-season total in school history. He averaged
8.2 rebounds per game during his four-year career, and averaged
11.5 rebounds per game as a senior. Jim scored 535 points during
his career, which currently ranks 44th on the all-time scoring
list.
Hubert
Hoosman – Men’s Basketball
Hubert played four years on the men’s basketball team
under Hall of Fame coach Chuck Smith from 1975 to 1979. He scored
1,351 points on his career, the sixth best total in UMSL history.
Hubert ranks third in career field goals made with 578 and averaged
13.5 points per game for his career. He shot 46.9% from the
field in his career, including 57.4% from the field during his
freshman year.
Jim
Lockett – Baseball
Jim played three seasons for the UMSL baseball team from 1977
to 1979, helping the team advance to the NCAA Regionals all
three seasons and to the College World Series in 1977. As a
senior in 1979, he was named a first team all-region selection
and a second team All-American. That season, he finished with
a .483 batting average that still ranks as the best season average
in school history. Jim ranks ninth in career hits and is fourth
in career triples.
Dan
Muesenfechter – Men’s Soccer
Dan played two seasons at UMSL and led the men’s soccer
team in goals scored in each of those two years. He was a two-time
All-American selection in both 1979 and 1980, and both years
at UMSL he helped lead the team to the NCAA Tournament, reaching
the quarterfinals in 1980. He ranks ninth in the UMSL records
in career scoring with 52 points, and is tenth in career goals
scored with 20. His 14 goals scored in 1980 rank as the fifth
best single season total in school history, and his 33 points
that season rank as the sixth best in school history. His legacy
with UMSL soccer continues today, as his daughter, Krisie, was
a Daktronics All-Region selection last year for the UMSL women’s
team, and his son Dan was a freshman on the men’s team
this past season.
Chris
Sanders – Men’s Golf
Chris played four seasons on the UMSL men’s golf team
from 1991 through 1994, earning MIAA All-Conference honors in
1992 and 1993. He was a member of the team that won back-to-back
MIAA Conference Championships in 1992 and 1993 as well as trips
to the NCAA National Tournaments those same two seasons. Chris
finished second individually at both the 1992 and the 1993 MIAA
Championships. He had the team’s lowest scoring average
on the season as a freshman, and the second best scoring average
on the team in both his sophomore and junior seasons.
Tim
Smith – Men’s Soccer
Tim played two seasons at UMSL in 1972 and 1973, and was a member
of the men’s soccer national championship team in 1973.
He ranks 13th in the UMSL career scoring list with 46 career
points on 18 goals and 10 assists. Tim led the national championship
team in scoring in 1973 with 13 goals, which still ranks as
the sixth best single season total in UMSL history. His 34 points
that season ranks as the fifth best point total in a single
season as well. Tim holds individual single game records for
most goals with four in one game, and for most points in a game
with ten.
Rich
Meckfessel – Head Men’s Basketball Coach
Coach Meckfessel was the UMSL men’s basketball coach for
17 years from 1983 through 1999, the longest tenure of any basketball
head coach in UMSL history. He recorded 214 career wins during
that time, also the most of any basketball coach in UMSL history.
Coach Meckfessel led the 1987-88 team to a 22-9 record and the
1990-91 team to a 22-6 record, both of which mark the school’s
record for most wins in a season. The 1987-88 team qualified
for the NCAA Division Tournament and advanced to the Sweet 16,
and is still the last men’s basketball team to qualify
for the NCAA Tournament. Coach Meckfessel was named MIAA Coach
of the Year three times in his career and was named NCAA Division
II South Central Regional Coach of the Year in 1984-85. In addition
to being the head basketball coach, he served as UMSL’s
Interim Athletic Director from 1992 through 1995.
In
addition to the individual inductees, there will be a special
recognition of the 1987-88 UMSL men’s basketball team.
That year, the Rivermen finished with a 22-9 overall record,
which still stands as the school record for most wins in a season.
It was also the last UMSL team to qualify for the NCAA Tournament,
winning the MIAA Tournament that season. UMSL Sports Hall of
Famer and current head coach Chris Pilz was a freshman on that
team, and 2007 inductee Rich Meckfessel was the head coach.
