UMSL Falls a Few Points Short Over the Weekend

Warrensburg, Mo. - The UMSL volleyball team dropped two matches in five games over the weekend, falling 3-2 (30-20, 30-24, 29-31, 28-30, 15-13) to ninth-ranked Central Missouri State, then lost 3-2 (30-28, 27-30, 26-30, 30-20, 15-7) to Northwest Missouri State.

UMSL dropped the first two games against ninth-ranked Central Missouri State before coming back and forcing a fifth game. UM-St. Louis lost 30-20, 30-24 in the first two games, but came back with 24 team kills and just two hitting errors in the third game to win 31-29. UMSL then held on for a 30-28 win in the fourth game to push CMSU into a fifth game. In that fifth game, UMSL fell behind early, giving up the first eight points, before fighting back and getting within on point at 14-13 before CMSU got the final point of the match to win the fifth game 15-13.

Against CMSU, Claudia Medina had a team best 23 kills and added 19 digs. Erin Denton had 18 kills and 16 digs and Chelsea Baumstark recorded 14 kills and just three errors in 35 attempts. Joslyn Brown had 28 digs and Lisa Brinker had 58 assists and 23 digs.

On Saturday, UMSL fell short in the first game against Northwest Missouri State, before coming back and winning the next two games. Northwest Missouri then forced a fifth game by winning game four. UMSL fell behind early in the fifth game, dropping the first four points, and got no closer than four points the rest of the way. The loss to Northwest Missouri State was the fourth straight, five-game loss for UMSL.

Against Northwest Missouri State, Erin Denton lead UMSL with 21 kills and just three errors for a hitting percentage of .409 for the match. Christy Trame added 19 kills and Claudia Medina had 18 kills in the match. Lisa Brinker had 62 assists and 19 digs and Joslyn Brown had a team high 26 digs.

UMSL is now 4-8 on the season and will resume confernece competition when they travel to play at Quincy on Tuesday, September 19.
