Early Deficits Too Much for UMSL UMSL Falls to Southern Indiana 3-0 St. Louis, Mo. – The Missouri-St. Louis volleyball team fell behind early and could not climb back against visiting Southern Indiana on Friday night, falling 3-0 (30-28, 30-24, 30-19) to the Screaming Eagles. The first game was even early, with nine ties through the first part of the game. The last tie came at 18-18 after a kill by UMSL’s Chelsea Baumstark (Hermann, Mo./Hermann). USI then scored six of the next seven points to lead 25-20. UMSL still trailed by five at 28-23 when UMSL scored five of the next six points to cut the lead to one point at 29-28, but USI got final point to win the first game. USI jumped out to a quick advantage in the second game, leading 9-3 in the early going. USI led by eight points at 18-10 when UMSL charged back. The Riverwomen went on a 9-2 run, including five straight points to cut the deficit to one point at 20-19. USI got the next two points and held of UMSL from there to win the second game 30-24. In the third game, the Screaming Eagles soared out to a quick 9-1 lead to take control. UMSL would eventually close the gap to six points at 17-11 after an ace by Lisa Brinker (Washington, Mo./Washington), but USI would control the game from there for the 30-19 win. UMSL was led by Claudia Medina (Las Cruces,
N.M./Las Cruces) with 10 kills and 16 digs on the night and Lisa Brinker
had 33 assists. UMSL is now 6-20 overall on the season and is 6-20 in
the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Riverwomen will be at home again
on Saturday afternoon when they host SIU Edwardsville at 1 pm.
