UMSL Soars Past Hawks

UMSL Wins 3-0 Over Quincy

St. Louis, Mo. – The Missouri-St. Louis volleyball team got a balanced attack and swept Quincy University on Tuesday evening. UMSL got seven or more kills from four different players, and tallied nine total service aces to win 3-0 (30-22, 30-19, 30-25).

In the first game, it was tied early at 10-10 when UMSL went on a 7-1 run and pushed their lead out to 17-11 to take control of the game. From there, the Riverwomen held on for the 30-22 win in the opening game. UMSL got the first three points of the second game and led 10-5 before Quincy fought back. The Hawks got to within three points, cutting the UMSL lead to 18-15, when the Riverwomen scored the next four points, including three straight service aces from Claudia Medina (Las Cruces, N.M./Las Cruces). UMSL cruised from there, scoring seven of the final eight points in the game to win 30-19. The third game saw Quincy get a 6-4 lead that led to an UMSL timeout. The Riverwomen came out of the break strong, scoring the next five points to lead 9-6 after a kill from Medina. Quincy came back and got the lead again at 19-17 when Medina got another service ace to cut it to one point at 19-18. After another point from the Hawks made it 20-18, UMSL got the next five points to take control and lead 23-20 and then got the final three points of the match for the 30-25 win.

UMSL was led by Claudia Medina with a team-high 11 kills, nine digs and four service aces. Sarah Eisnaugle (Newark, Ill./Newark) added 10 kills and eight digs and Shamika Williams (St. Louis, Mo./Pattonville) recorded eight kills. Heather Nichols (Black Earth, Wis./Edgewood) led the team with 11 digs and had seven kills while Lisa Brinker (Washington, Mo./Washington) had a team best 37 assists.

UMSL is now 6-19 on the season and 6-8 in the GLVC. The Riverwomen will be at home for two more conference games this weekend when they host Southern Indiana on Friday at 7 pm, and SIU Edwardsville on Saturday at 1 pm.
