UMSL Spikes Panthers in Three Straight

Medina Leads UMSL with 12 Kills

St. Louis, Mo. – The Missouri-St. Louis volleyball team won two games easily, then left some drama in the third game before closing out a 3-0 win over Kentucky Wesleyan, beating the Panthers 30-19, 30-22, 32-30. The win improves UMSL to 3-12 on the season and an even 3-3 in the GLVC while Kentucky Wesleyan falls to 2-10 overall and 0-4 in the GLVC.

UMSL jumped out to a quick lead in the first game with a 10-3 advantage early. KWC could get no closer than six in that game at 16-10 as the Riverwomen cruised to a 30-19 win. UMSL made just one hitting error in game one while KWC committed 11. The Panthers held a small lead in the second game, and had a three-point advantage at 12-9 before UMSL made a comeback. The Riverwomen scored 10 of the next 12 points to lead 18-14, including a kill from Claudia Medina (Las Cruces, N.M./Las Cruces) that tied the game at 13-13. From there UMSL extended that lead and won the second game 30-22. The third game saw the Panthers get the quick lead, taking a six-point advantage at 11-6. UMSL fought from behind the whole game, and used a 6-2 run late that cut the deficit to three points at 21-18. KWC held on to the lead and had game point at 29-26 before UMSL scored three straight points to tie it at 29-29. After a point from KWC, Medina got another kill to tie it at 30-30 and UMSL scored the next two points to win 32-30 and close out the 3-0 win.

Claudia Medina led the team with 12 kills and added 11 digs on the night. Sarah Eisnaugle (Newark, Ill./Newark) had nine kills and no hitting errors on the night and Chelsea Baumstark (Hermann, Mo./Hermann) had seven kills and five blocks on the night. Heather Nichols (Black Earth, Wis./Edgewood) head a team-best 19 digs and Lisa Brinker (Washington, Mo./Washington) had 32 assists.

UMSL is now 3-12 on the season and an even 3-3 in the GLVC. The Riverwomen will be home again on Saturday when they host Alabama-Huntsville at 10 am and Central Missouri State at 3 pm.
