Volleyball Wins First Match of the Year

Medina Leads UMSL with Career Best 25 Kills in Win

St. Louis, Mo. – The Missouri-St. Louis volleyball team closed out the opening weekend of GLVC action with a five-game win over Wisconsin-Parkside, winning 17-30, 30-27, 32-30, 24-30, 15-13. UMSL (1-9, 1-1 GLVC) got their first win of the season and stayed in the middle of the pack of the GLVC standings on the opening weekend of conference play.

UMSL got in an early hole, losing the first game 30-17, but rebounded strong and had just three hitting errors in the second game, winning 30-27 to even the match out. The third game took some extra points to decide a winner, but UMSL prevailed 32-30 to take the advantage. After UWP came back to win the fourth game, UMSL held on in the fifth and deciding game, winning 15-13 to give UMSL the win.

Claudia Medina (Las Cruces, N.M./Las Cruces) led the UMSL attack with a career best 25 kills in the match and added 22 digs as well. Heather Nichols (Black Earth, Wis./Edgewood) had 16 kills and 22 digs for the Riverwomen and Lisa Brinker (Washington, Mo./Washington) had 57 assists and 10 digs. Chelsea Baumstark (Hermann, Mo./Hermann) recorded eight kills and a team-best six total blocks.

On Friday night, UMSL suffered a loss at Lewis in their GLVC opener, losing in three straight games, 30-14, 30-26, 30-21. Claudia Medina had 16 kills and Heather Nichols had 12 kills while Lisa Brinker added 37 assists and eight digs in the loss.

UMSL is now 1-9 on the season and 1-1 in the GLVC. The Riverwomen will be in action again this Wednesday, September 21, in their home opener against Washington (Mo.) University at 7 pm.
