First Place Southern Indiana Defeats UMSL

Sak Records 11 Kills in 3-0 Loss

Evansville, Ind. – The UMSL volleyball team fell 3-0 at Southern Indiana on Saturday afternoon. The Screaming Eagles, who moved into a tie for first place in the GLVC with the win, beat the Riverwomen 30-21, 30-19, 30-15. UMSL was led by Daria Sak (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) who had 11 kills and seven digs in the game. Ashley Richmond (Milford, Ohio/Milford) led UMSL with nine digs and had 23 assists as well.

In the first game, UMSL jumped out to a quick lead by scoring the first three points of the game. Claudia Medina (Las Cruces, N.M./Las Cruces) then got back-to-back service aces to push the lead to 9-4, and the Riverwomen led by as many as eight points at 13-5 when USI made a strong comeback. Using a 13-1 run, the Screaming Eagles took their first lead of the game and held on for the 30-21 win in the opening game. UMSL again got a quick start in the second game, scoring the first two points. With the score tied 11-11, Southern Indiana got the next four points to lead 15-11, and later used a 5-0 run to take command and win the second game 30-19. The final game saw USI make a run early, erasing a 2-1 UMSL lead by scoring seven straight points to lead 8-2, and would extend that lead to as many as 12 points at 21-9 before the 30-15 final score and the 3-0 win.

UMSL falls to 7-12 overall on the season and is now 3-7 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. UMSL is now tied for seventh in the conference with Quincy and Wisconsin-Parkside, with all three teams sitting two games behind Lewis University for the sixth and final spot in the GLVC Tournament with six conference games remaining. UMSL will host Quincy on Wednesday night, October 20, at 7 pm.
