UMSL Comes From Behind to Beat Quincy

Riverwomen Drop First Two Games, Win Next Three

St. Louis, Mo. – It was déjà vu all over again, only this time in reverse as the UMSL volleyball team defeated Quincy 3-2 on Friday night. The Riverwomen dropped the first two games but fought back to win the next three and take the victory by scores of 28-30, 25-30, 30-18, 30-28, 15-10. It was the same type of scenario as an earlier match between the same two teams at Quincy, where the Lady Hawks dropped the first two games to UMSL before bouncing back to take the next three for the win.

The Lady Hawks took the first two games, winning 30-28 and 30-25 before the Riverwomen started their comeback. In the third game, UMSL dominated, committing just three hitting errors in the game while Quincy had 11 errors, as UMSL won the third game 30-18 to gain the momentum in the match. UMSL carried the momentum into the fourth game where they held off a couple of runs by Quincy and edged out a 30-28 win and forced a fifth game. In that fifth game, UMSL grabbed the early lead and never looked back, getting the final point of the match on a service ace by Nikki Pagels (Fox River Grove, Ill./Cary Grove).

Kathryn Freeman (Goodyear, Ariz./Centennial) led UMSL with 19 kills and Gillian Falknor (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) added 18 kills. UMSL dominated at the net as well, recording 16 team blocks, led by Melissa Frost (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNichols) with six block assists and Nikki Pagels added seven total blocks, three solo and four assists.

With the win, UMSL improves to 6-9 on the season and 3-4 in the GLVC. The Riverwomen will be in action again next Wednesday when they play at SIU Edwardsville.
