UMSL Stumbles at Emporia State Tournament

Riverwomen Drop All Three Matches on the Weekend

Emporia, Kan. – The UMSL volleyball team stumbled in the final day of the Emporia State Tournament, dropping their two matches on Saturday. The Riverwomen fell 3-0 to host Emporia State and then dropped a close 3-2 match against Southwest Baptist.

In the match against Emporia State, UMSL lost 30-22, 30-21, 30-20 as the Riverwomen hurt themselves by making a total of 31 hitting errors in the three games. The final game of the weekend was a heart stopper, as UMSL fell in five games 23-30, 31-29, 30-28, 20-30, 15-10. After taking the first game, UMSL lost the next two by a combined four points. The Riverwomen won the fourth game handly before falling in the fifth game 15-10. Gillian Falknor (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Groves) had 19 kills in the match against Southwest Baptist while Ashley Richmond (Milford, Ohio/Milford) had 34 assists.

Melissa Frost (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNichols) was named to the All-Tournament team. In the three matches for the weekend, Frost registered 30 kills (2.31 per game) with a hitting percentage of .256 in 78 total attempts. She also had 29 digs (2.23 per game) and 14 total blcoks (1.08 per game).

UMSL is now 3-4 on the season and will open conference play this weekend at home. The Riverwomen will host Southern Indiana on Friday night at 7 pm and then host Kentucky Wesleyan on Saturday at 1 pm.
