Riverwomen Drop Early Lead, Lose 3-2 to Quincy

ST. LOUIS, MO – The UMSL volleyball team was headed to a win in the conference opener until the Quincy Hawks mounted a comeback. Down two games to none, Quincy fought back to win the last three games and take the win, defeating the Riverwomen 3-2 (28-30, 16-30, 30-25, 31-29, 15-10).

The first game was a back and forth battle, with neither tam leading by more than five points, as UMSL held on for the 30-28 win. In the second game, the Riverwomen trailed 5-2 before scoring eight straight points and taking command of that game. The Riverwomen then led 21-13 before reeling off seven straight points and took a 30-16 win and seemed headed for the victory. Quincy fought back in the third game and staked a 16-9 lead early, then held on for the 30-25 win. The fourth game saw UMSL hold the lead most of the game until Quincy came back and tied it at 25-25. It then went back and forth until the Hawks got two points at the end to win 31-29. The fifth game was tied five times early on before Quincy took a 9-7 lead and then scored the last two points for the 15-10 win.

Gillian Falknor (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) led UMSL with 17 kills on the night. Liz Blair (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway North) added 15 kills and 17 digs and Ashley Richmond (Milford, Ohio/Milford) had 35 assists for UMSL. Quincy was led by Amber Heimann and Jenny Gramer with 17 kills each.

UMSL is now 9-4 on the season and 0-1 in the GLVC. The Riverwomen will be at home again on Saturday afternoon when they host Rockhurst at 2 pm.
