| UMSL Beats SIUE Riverwomen Edge Cougars 3-1 ST. LOUIS, MO – The UMSL volleyball team notched a big conference win Wednesday night with a 3-1 win over SIU Edwardsville, winning by scores of 16-30, 30-28, 30-25, 30-24. The Cougars won the first game after jumping out to a quick start. SIUE used a 9-1 run early to grab an 11-3 lead and cruised from there to a 30-16 win in game one. The second game was a back and forth battle that saw a total of ten ties. With the score tied at 25-25 when UMSL jumped ahead with three straight points, only to have SIUE answer with three points of their own and tie it at 28-28. The Riverwomen then scored the final two points to take a 30-28 win. Game three was another tight one until SIUE reeled off five straight points to take a 21-16 lead. UMSL came charging back and after trailing 24-22, the Riverwomen scored eight of the next nine points to win the pivotal third game 30-25. UMSL edged out to a lead in the fourth game before SIU came back and tied the game at 12-12. UMSL then scored five straight points to take a 17-12 lead, only to have the Cougars slowly chip away at that lead and eventually take a 24-23 lead. After surrendering that lead, UMSL then answered right back and scored the final seven points for a 30-24 win. Liz Blair (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway North) led UMSL with 16 kills on the night and added 11 digs and three service aces. Kathryn Freeman (Goodyear, Ariz./Centennial) recorded 15 kills and had three blocks on the night and Melissa Frost (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) had nine kills and five blocks. SIUE was led by Jennifer Trame with 17 kills in the match. UMSL
improves to 11-7 on the season and 2-3 in the GLVC while SIU Edwardsville
falls to 13-7 overall and 3-2 in the GLVC. The Riverwomen will have
a week off and will be in action again on Friday, October 18 at Indianapolis.
