UMSL Sweeps All Titles at Principia Tournament

The UMSL men's tennis team got their spring season off to a great start, sweeping the title in all flights at the Principia Tournament this past weekend. The Rivermen had all three doubles teams and three singles players all go undefeated on the weekend.

Francis Lam went undefeated in winning the title at two singles, winning all three matches easily. He won 6-0, 6-0 in his first match, and then won each of the next two matches by identical scores of 6-2, 6-1. Andre Chimas went undefeated at five singles, with his closest match being a 6-4, 6-3 win over Truman State, and Ryan Burgdorfer won easily in all three of his matches in claiming the title at six singles.

Andreas Dimke played at one singles and went 2-1, with his lone loss coming in a three-set match, and was declared the winner in that flight. Boris Simic won the title at three singles, going 2-1 on the weekened with his only loss also coming in a three-set match. Peter Hantack also suffered his only loss of the weekend in three sets, but rebounded to win a three-set match over Truman State to secure the title at four singles.

In doubles play, UMSL did not lose a match in any of the three flights. Lam and Simic, who were ranked fourth in the region in the fall season, won 8-1 and 8-5 in their two matches to win the one doubles title. Burgdorfer and Hantack won the two doubles title with two wins of 8-0 and 8-5, and Dimke and John Harte won the three doubles title with wins of 8-0 and 8-4 in their two matches.

UMSL begins their spring season with a match against Lewis and Clark on March 13, and then play March 16 at Maryville before hosting Lewis on March 17 and Northwest Missouri State on March 18.
