UMSL Sweeps Singles Matches in Win

Rivermen Beat Truman State 7-2

Elsah, Ill. – The UMSL men’s tennis team opened its spring season with a big 7-2 win over Truman State. The Rivermen lost two of the three doubles matches, but rebounded to win all six singles matches in the victory.

Raj Saini (Victoria, British Columbia) and Francis Lam (Kettering, England) came away with the lone doubles victory for UMSL, winning 8-3 at two doubles. The three doubles match was a tight one, but saw UMSL fall 9-8 in that match. The Rivermen came up strong in the singles matches, winning all six matchups. Francis Lam won at one singes 6-4, 6-0 and Mike Schaaf (St. Louis, Mo./Francis Howell) won 7-5, 6-2 at two singles. Three and four singles were tough matches that both went to a third set tie breaker, as Stephen Pobst (Sikeston, Mo./Sikeston) won 7-6 (5), 5-7, (9) at three singles and Raj Saini won 6-2, 5-7, (9) at four singles. Max Bugner (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) won easily at five singles 6-1, 6-3, and Ryan Burgdorfer (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) had an equally easy victory at six singles, winning 6-1, 6-1.

UMSL will be in action again on March 12, when they open the GLVC season with a home match against Quincy.
