UMSL Tennis Aces SIUE Rivermen Beat Cougars 8-1 Edwardsville, Ill. - The Missouri St. Louis men’s tennis team continued their winning streak, defeating local rival SIU Edwardsville 8-1 on Tuesday afternoon. The win was the fourth consecutive victory for UMSL, who improves to 6-2 on the season and a perfect 4-0 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
UMSL won three tough doubles matches to take early control of the match.
Mike Schaaf (St. Louis, Mo./Francis Howell)
and Stephen Pobst (Sikeston, Mo./Sikeston) won
9-8 at one doubles, and Francis Lam (Kettering, England)
and Rajan Saini (Victoria, British Columbia)
was another close match at two doubles, winning 9-7. Ryan
Burgdorfer (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove) and Max
Bugner (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) pulled out an 8-6 win
at three doubles to complete the sweep. UMSL got a couple of easy wins
to open the singles matches, as Francis Lam, Mike Schaaf
and Stephen Pobst all posted two set wins
in the first three singles matches. Rajan Saini fought
out a tough three-set win at four singles, winning 5-7, 6-4, 10-8. Max
Bugner won a close match at five singles 6-2, 7-6 (7-3)
to round out the UMSL wins.
