UMSL Opens Conference Season with a Win

Rivermen Beat Quincy 8-1

St. Louis, Mo. – The UMSL men’s tennis team opened up the GLVC season with a dominating 8-1 win over Quincy University.

The Rivermen got off to a good start, sweeping all three doubles matches. The only close match of the three was at one doubles, where Mike Schaaf (St. Louis, Mo./Francis Howell) and Stephen Pobst (Sikeston, Mo./Sikeston) held on for an 8-6 win. In singles action, UMSL won five of the six matches, with the only loss coming in a third-set tiebreaker. Francis Lam (Kettering, England) won easily at on singles, 6-0, 6-1. Other easy singles wins were Stephen Pobst, a 6-0, 6-3 winner at three singles, and Raj Saini (Victoria, British Columbia), a 6-1, 6-0 winner at four singles. Max Bugner (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) was a 6-1, 6-4 winner at five singles and Ryan Burgdorfer (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) was a 6-3, 6-3 winner at six singles.

UMSL will play at St. Louis University on Wednesday, and at Maryville on Friday.
