UMSL Finishes Fourth at GLVC Tournament

Rivermen Win Opening Round Match

Lafayette, Ind. - The Missouri St. Louis men’s tennis finished in fourth place at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament. UMSL won its opening match against SIUE 5-3, but dropped their second round match against Southern Indiana 5-0. The Rivermen then lost to Northern Kentucky 5-2 in the third-place match.

In the opening round match, UMSL got a win at one doubles, but lost at two and three doubles to fall behind early. The Rivermen came through in the singles matches, winning four of the five completed matches for the win. Francis Lam got a 7-5, 6-2 win at one singles and Stephen Pobst got an easy 6-1, 6-1 win at three singles. Ryan Burgdorfer came through with a tough fought 7-5, 7-5 win at four singles in a key matchup, and Max Bugner won 6-4, 6-3 at five singles to clinch the win for UMSL.

The Rivermen were then swept by eventualy GLVC champion Southern Indiana in the second round, losing 5-0. Mike Schaaf and Stephen Pobst lost a tough fought match at one doubles - losing 9-8 (5). In the third-place match against Northern Kentucky, UMSL won two of the three doubles matches to grab an early lead, but the Norse came back and took four singles matches to win 5-2.
