UMSL Swats Past Lewis

Rivermen Win 6-1; Vaulkhard Nears Record

St. Louis, Mo. – The UMSL men’s tennis team cruised to a 5-1 victory over Lewis University on Friday afternoon in a GLVC matchup. The Rivermen won two of the three doubles matches and then won four singles matches as well in the victory.

UMSL dropped the one doubles match, but won two and three doubles for a 2-1 advantage going into singles play. The Rivermen then got four easy wins in singles play. Matt Vaulkhard (Victoria, British Columbia) won 6-2, 6-0 at one singles, Francis Lam (Kettering, England) won 6-2, 6-1 at three singles, Raj Saini (Victoria, British Columbia) won 6-1, 6-0 at four singles and Stephen Pobst (Sikeston, Mo./Sikeston) won 6-0, 6-1 at five singles for UMSL.

The Rivermen are now 8-7 on the season and 3-4 in the GLVC. With his win, Matt Vaulkhard moved to within one victory of the UMSL record for most career singles wins. The record is currently held by UMSL Sports Hall of Famer Tom January, who recorded 50 career wins at UMSL, with all of those coming at the one singles spot. Vaulkhard currently has 49 singles win during his career.
