UMSL Battles for Tough Win Rivermen Beat Washington (Mo.) University 6-3 St. Louis, Mo. – The UMSL men’s tennis team beat Washington (Mo.) University 6-3 on Wednesday afternoon, battling through some tough matches to capture the win. In singles play, UMSL had three matches go the full three sets, and in each one UMSL dropped the opening set, but battled back to win the next two. Matt Vaulkhard (Victoria, British Columbia) got a win at one singles, winning 3-6, 7-6, 7-5. Francis Lam (Kettering, England) was another three set winning at three singles, with a 2-6, 7-5, 6-1 victory and Stephen Pobst (Sikeston, Mo./Sikeston) won 5-7, 7-6, 6-0 at five singles. UMSL pulled out two close doubles matches as well, with Pobst and Mike Schaaf (St. Louis, Mo./Francis Howell) winning 8-6 at two doubles and Vaulkhard and James Daugherty (White Settlement, Texas/Brewer) winning 9-8 (4) at three doubles. UMSL is now 7-7 on the season and will be home the next three days, hosting Vincennes on Thursday at 3 pm, then hosting Lewis for a conference match on Friday at 3 pm, and closing out the conference season by hosting Saint Joseph's on Saturday at 3 pm.
