UMSL Splits Weekend Matches

Rivermen Fall to Northwest Missouri State; Beat Emporia State

Maryville, Mo. – The UMSL men’s tennis team split a couple of matches over the weekend, falling 7-1 to Northwest Missouri State, but rebounded to defeat Emporia State 7-2.

Against Northwest Missouri State on Friday, UMSL got a big win at one doubles as Martin Kardos and Matt Vaulkhard combined for an 8-5 win in that match, keeping their record perfect on the season in doubles matches. That was the only win UMSL could record however, as Northwest Missouri State won two and three doubles by identical 8-2 scores. Two of the singles matches went to three sets, as Matt Vaulkhard lost 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 at two doubles and Martin Damm fell 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 at four singles.

On Saturday, the Rivermen bounced back and beat Emporia State 7-2. Kardos and Vaulkhard again teamed up for an 8-2 win at one doubles, and Mike Schaaf and Martin Damm recorded an 8-4 win at two doubles. UMSL then took five of the six singles matches in the win. Martin Kardos won 6-2, 6-0 at one singles in an easy win. Mike Schaaf needed the third set tiebreaker to win at three singles, winning 6-3, 1-6 (7). UMSL notched easier wins in four, five at six singles as Martin Damm won 6-1, 6-2 at four singles, Rajan Saini won 6-0, 6-4 at five singles and Stephen Pobst won 6-1, 6-2 at six singles.

UMSL is now 5-2 on the season and will begin conference play this week when UMSL plays at SIU Edwardsville on Tuesday and then travels to play at Indianapolis and at Northern Kentucky this coming weekend.
