Rivermen End Season With Loss to Wayne State

Big Rapids, Mich. – The UMSL men’s tennis team lost to Wayne State 5-0 in the opening round of the NCAA Championships on Friday morning. It was the second straight year the Rivermen qualified for the NCAA Tournament and the second straight year the team fell to Wayne State in the opening round.

UMSL got in a hole early, dropping all three doubles matches. Matt Vaulkhard and Mike Schaaf dropped an 8-4 match at one doubles and Mario Gruden and Rajan Saini were defeated 8-3 at two doubles. The doubles sweep was complete with an 8-2 win by Wayne State over the team of Martin Kardos and Martin Damm at three doubles.

The Warriors completed the win by taking the first two singles matches that were finished. Martin Kardos fell at one singles by a score of 6-4, 7-5 and Mario Gruden lost 6-3, 6-3 at four singles for UMSL. Each of the remaining four matches were all close, including the match at two singles where Matt Vaulkhard took his opponent into a third set.

The Rivermen finish their season with a 14-7 record on the season.
