Freshman Duo Leads UMSL Past Saint Joseph's

Smith, Regan Score First Career Goals in 3-1 Victory

St. Louis, Mo. – The Missouri-St. Louis men’s soccer team notched their first win of the season in a conference matchup against visiting Saint Joseph’s with a 3-1 victory. UMSL (1-0-1, 1-0 GLVC) got two goals in the first half and added an insurance goal late in the second half to hold off the Pumas (3-3, 0-1 GLVC).

The Rivermen got two early goals from a pair of freshmen, who both recorded their first career goals. After having a near miss on a header early in the game, Jared Smith (Hazelwood, Mo./Hazelwood West) scored on a header in the 18th minute for a 1-0 lead and his first career collegiate goal. Late in the half, Brett Regan (St. Louis, Mo./DeSmet) scored in the 37th minute for his first career goal at UMSL and gave the Rivermen a 2-0 halftime advantage. Saint Joseph’s cut the lead in half midway through the second half but Alen Jujic (St. Louis, Mo./Affton) blasted a shot off a free kick from 30-yards out to give UMSL an insurance goal and the 3-1 victory.

UMSL is now 1-0-1 on the season and 1-0 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Rivermen will host 21st-ranked Indianapolis on Sunday at 2:30 pm.
