UMSL Extends to Four-Game Win Streak with Blowout Victory

Dave Seckman Scores Twice and Adds Two Assists in 9-2 Win

St. Louis , Mo. – The University of St.-Louis men’s soccer team took the pitch against the Upper Iowa University Peacocks. Back to back goals by David Walters (St. Louis, Mo./Ritenour) and Kraig Tenge (Hazelwood, Mo./Hazelwood Central) allowed the Rivermen to lunge into an early lead. Dave Seckman (Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton) got a break away goal to put the Rivermen up 3-0 and then backed it up with another goal towards the end of the half. In the second half Doug Drezek (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central) gave the Rivermen a 5-0 lead. Four minutes later Alen Jujic (St. Louis, Mo./Afton) regained UMSL’s five point lead. Matt Anderson (St. Louis, Mo./Northwest) and Kurt Schuler (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central) tallied back-to-back goals that put the Rivermen 8-1. Before the end of the game, Anderson tallied another goal.

The Rivermen jumped out to an early lead within the first ten minutes of play. Walters out maneuvered the Peacocks’ goalie to dump the ball into the net. Jeff Menke (St. Louis, Mo./Rosary) and Alen Jujic (St. Louis, Mo./Afton) each tallied an assist on the goal. Tenge put another goal on the board for UMSL less then a minute later. Menke passed the ball to Drezek who took a shot that deflected off the goalie to Tenge, who scored off the deflection and also gave Menke and Drezek each an assist. Later in the half Seckman broke away from the flock and out maneuvered the goalie to give the Rivermen a 3-0 lead. Seckman came back with less then two minutes in the half to put another one by Upper Iowa. John Doht (Webster Groves, Mo./Webster Groves) tallied the assist on the goal. At the end of the half, UM-St. Louis was on top 4-0.

The beginning of the second half was dominated by the Rivermen, during which time they put another goal on the board. Drezek scored with an assist from Timmy Sellers (Hazelwood, Mo./Hazelwood West). Upper Iowa came right back, however, to put a goal on the board. Three minutes later UMSL would regain their five-point lead when Jujic put a one-on-one break away into the back of the net. Anderson would take the next crack at the Peacock goalie when he blasted one by assisted by Seckman. Thirty seconds later Schuler would get is own rebound from his first shot to slam it back into the net. Anderson hustled down the field in time to catch a pass from Seckman and bury it in the net. Upper Iowa tried to fire up a come back and put another goal on the board, however it would not be enough as


After starting the season with three straight losses, the Rivermen have bounced back and won four consecutive games. The last time UM-St. Louis had a four-game winning streak was the 1998 season when the team finished at 11-7-2 on the year. The Rivermen will travel to Quincy to begin conference play on Sunday, September 19; game time is set for 12 noon.
