UMSL Comes up Short in Double Overtime Loss

Rivermen Fall to 5th-Ranked SIUE 1-0

Edwardsville, Ill. – The Missouri-St. Louis men’s soccer team faced off with SIU Edwardsville, the fifth-ranked team in the nation, on Friday evening and nearly pulled out a win. UMSL fell 1-0 in double overtime, as the Cougars scored the game winning goal with just over one minute left in the game.

UMSL managed just three shots against the Cougars, who registered 27 shots on their offensive end of the field. UMSL goalkeeper Zach Hoette (Florissant, Mo./Rosary) kept UMSL in the game with six saves on the night. The two team were both scoreless after 90 minutes of regulation and through the first ten minute overtime period. In the second and final ten-minute overtime period, the Cougars got a goal from John Matthews who took a loose ball in the box and shot it past the UMSL defense for the 1-0 double overtime win.

The Rivermen fall to 6-8-2 on the season and 2-5-1 in the GLVC. UMSL will be on the road again on Sunday when they play at another nationally ranked team, facing off against 9th-ranked Lewis.
